A pedestrian has been killed in an apparent “cocktail” bomb explosion in the Mogbazar area of Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, police have said.
The victim, identified as Siam, was struck on the head after an explosive device was thrown from a flyover onto the road below on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred at around 7:00pm in front of Media Goli in Mogbazar, according to eyewitnesses.
Witnesses said an unidentified person threw the explosive from the flyover, and it landed on the head of the pedestrian as he was passing underneath. He sustained severe head injuries and heavy bleeding and died at the scene.
Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Ramna Division said preliminary findings suggest the explosion involved a powerful cocktail bomb.
“The pedestrian named Siam was killed beneath the Mogbazar flyover. We believe he was struck by a strong explosive device and died on the spot,” he said, adding that the victim had been standing there drinking tea at the time.
Police said the area has been secured and an investigation is under way to identify those responsible.
