Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has announced that it will operate special metro rail services on December 31 in addition to its regular schedule to facilitate commuters travelling to the namaz-e-janaza of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, DMTCL said the additional services would be introduced to accommodate the large number of people expected to attend the funeral prayer.
The notice, signed by DMTCL director AKM Khairul Alam, said “special extra metro trains” would be operated before and after the scheduled services to ease passenger movement.
According to the organisers, the namaz-e-janaza is expected to be held at around 2:00 pm, after Zuhr prayers, at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and the adjacent Manik Mia Avenue in Dhaka.
Authorities expect significant crowds in and around the parliament area, and commuters have been advised to use public transport where possible and to follow official instructions on movement and security arrangements.
DMTCL said further operational details, including service frequency and crowd-management measures at nearby metro stations, would be shared through official channels as needed.
The metro operator added that the special services were part of efforts to ensure smoother transportation and minimise disruption during the funeral proceedings.
