The Election Commission has begun the third consecutive day of hearings on appeals against returning officers’ decisions ahead of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, as the process of finalising candidate lists continues.
Proceedings started at 10am on Monday at the Election Commission auditorium in Agargaon, Dhaka, with the full commission, headed by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin, scheduled to hear cases until 5pm. Appeals numbered 141 to 210 are being considered during the day.
On Sunday, the second day of hearings, the commission approved 58 appeals, while seven applications were rejected and six were kept pending, according to official figures released by the EC.
The Election Commission also confirmed that an appeal filed by Md Mohiuddin, an independent candidate from the Munshiganj-3 constituency, which had remained unresolved on the first day, was approved during Sunday’s session.
Earlier, on Saturday, the commission approved 52 appeals on the opening day of the hearings. Taken together, more than 100 candidates have regained their nominations over the past two days, significantly shaping the contest for the upcoming parliamentary election.
Md Ruhul Amin Mollik, director of public relations at the EC Secretariat, said appeals numbered 211 to 280 will be heard on Monday, adding that the overall appeal process will continue until 18 January.
Election Commission officials said certified copies of rulings from hearings held on 10, 11 and 12 January will be available for collection from the reception desk of the EC building on Monday. In addition, decisions are being displayed on electronic monitors immediately after each hearing, while copies of the rulings are also being sent to the concerned parties via email.
A total of 645 appeals have been filed with the Election Commission over the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, highlighting the scale of challenges surrounding the nomination process.
