Religious Affairs Adviser A F M Khalid Hossain stated on Monday that the government aims to uphold the spirit of the July revolution through the referendum.
"If the populace secures victory through the casting of 'Yes' votes in the referendum, the rise of nationwide fascism will be effectively prevented within the country," he stated.
The adviser made this statement while serving as the chief guest at the National Imam Conference, held to promote and encourage public support for the referendum, at Nimtala Habiganj on Monday.
He stated that the mindset of maintaining power through farcical elections disguised as so-called polls in an effort to preserve authority would be eradicated through the referendum.
He observed that any substantive amendments to the Constitution must be implemented via a referendum conducted by an elected government, and he emphasised that this process would establish a balance of power between the President and the Prime Minister.
Regarding the elections, Khalid Hossain stated that, for the first time in Bangladesh's history, a free, fair, and inclusive election would be conducted. In previous elections, the government determined the individuals who would assume power; however, this time, the party that secures the majority of votes from the people will be elected, he added.
We are all conducting ourselves in a neutral manner, he stated, urging the public to safeguard the ballot boxes in the forthcoming election.
Under the chairmanship of Habiganj Deputy Commissioner Abu Hasnat Mohammad Arefin, Superintendent of Police Mst Yasmin Khatun and other senior officials of the administration also addressed the event.
