Russian Federation on Monday handed over 30,000 tonnes of Muriate of Potash fertiliser to Bangladesh as a gift under the World Food Programme (WFP).
Russia’s leading fertiliser producer Uralchem is providing the fertiliser as a gift to Bangladesh, according to an official release.
On the occasion, a programme was held at BARC auditorium in Dhaka in which Agriculture and Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury was present as the chief guest.
Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bangladesh Alexander G Khozin attended the function as special guest, while Secretary of the agriculture ministry Dr Mohammad Emdad Ullah Mian was in the chair.
Agriculture Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said in the current global context, food and fertiliser supply has emerged as a major challenge. The adverse impacts of climate change, instability in international markets and various global crises are being felt in the agricultural sector.
In such circumstances, global cooperation and partnership are more important than ever before, he said.
The adviser also said at present, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) has a stock of 1.035 million metric tons of fertilisers, other than urea, which is the highest stock since the establishment of the organisation in 1961.
In addition, significant progress has been achieved in the agricultural sector during the tenure of the current interim government, the adviser added.
