Detectives in Bangladesh have arrested Evaly Managing Director Mohammad Rassel and the company’s chairperson, Shamima Nasrin, once again, as legal proceedings linked to the troubled e-commerce firm continue.

A team from the Detective Branch detained the two early on Tuesday in the Dhanmondi area of the capital, according to Saiful Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station. He said the arrests were carried out in connection with multiple outstanding cases.

Police officials said a total of 391 arrest warrants are currently pending against Mohammad Rassel and Shamima Nasrin. However, authorities did not immediately clarify which specific cases prompted the latest detention.

The pair were previously arrested in September 2021 amid a sweeping investigation into Evaly, once one of Bangladesh’s most prominent online marketplaces. The company came under scrutiny following allegations of large-scale fraud and embezzlement after customers complained of paying for products that were never delivered.

Shamima Nasrin was released on bail in April 2022, while Mohammad Rassel secured bail later that year, in December. Since then, multiple legal cases have continued to move through the courts, including those filed by customers, banks and regulatory bodies.

Evaly rose rapidly during Bangladesh’s e-commerce boom, attracting attention for offering unusually steep discounts and aggressive marketing campaigns. Regulators later accused the company of operating a business model that relied on advance customer payments without sufficient safeguards, raising concerns about consumer protection and financial transparency in the sector.

The case has become one of the most high-profile corporate scandals in Bangladesh in recent years and has prompted tighter oversight of online commerce platforms by authorities. The government has since introduced stricter rules aimed at protecting consumers and preventing similar collapses in the fast-growing digital marketplace.

Police said further details regarding Tuesday’s arrests would be provided once formal case documentation is reviewed and the accused are produced before a court.
