Chairperson of the European Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (EuroCham) Nuria Lopez paid a courtesy call on Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministries of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Water Resources, and Information and Broadcasting.

The meeting took place on Thursday at the adviser’s office in the Ministry of Environment at Bangladesh Secretariat.

During the meeting, the EuroCham delegation shared their views on the formulation of the final guidelines on Extended Producer Responsibility by the Department of Environment, particularly in relation to controlling plastic waste generated by various companies.

The adviser said that Bangladesh is interested in adopting a realistic, future-oriented, sustainable and fair framework.

She emphasised that a single and unified compliance framework is essential to prevent competitive disparities and urged equal participation from all stakeholders, said a press release.

She also directed the Department of Environment to finalise the guidelines at the earliest possible time through stakeholder consultations and by reviewing the relevant laws of the European Union and neighbouring countries.

Nuria Lopez said European companies have global commitments to sustainability. She expressed their commitment to ensuring fair competition in the market and achieving 100 per cent recyclable packaging.

She added that the European Union is keen to work with Bangladesh to maintain environmental balance.

Both sides also discussed other issues of mutual interest.
