Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, has stressed the importance of strengthening local manufacturing to reduce Bangladesh’s reliance on imported digital devices.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the three-day Digital Device and Innovation Expo 2026 in Dhaka on Saturday, Taiyeb said sustainable success in the technology sector would only be achieved through domestic production.
“Real progress will come when we move towards local manufacturing and gradually reduce our dependence on imported digital devices,” he said at the event, held at Hotel InterContinental.
The expo was jointly organised by the Information and Communication Technology Division, the Bangladesh Hi-Tech Park Authority and the Bangladesh Computer Samity, bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and technology entrepreneurs.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said the government has already taken policy decisions in principle to reduce duties in sectors such as battery manufacturing and mobile phone production. He added that closer cooperation between the government and the business community would be essential to facilitate local computer manufacturing.
Addressing business leaders, he said the government would be able to adopt more resilient and supportive policies if entrepreneurs could demonstrate how policy incentives contribute to increased government revenue and long-term economic growth.
Highlighting the potential of Bangladesh’s domestic digital device market, Taiyeb noted that smartphone penetration currently stands at about 45 per cent, while laptop usage is around 10 per cent and tablet usage is between 2 and 5 per cent.
He said these figures indicate substantial room for expansion, particularly among young people, as demand for digital devices continues to grow across the country.
“There is significant scope to expand this market further, especially among the youth,” he added.
