Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hussain on Monday reiterated that the government will not take any action concerning Bangladesh’s principal seaport that goes against national interests.

Speaking to journalists at his office, he said the authorities are currently investigating individuals involved in the ongoing issues affecting Chattogram Port.

“The government is looking into the matter to identify those responsible for the current disruptions in port operations,” he added.

Brig Gen Sakhawat emphasised that the Ministry of Shipping is fully committed to taking measures that benefit both the port and the nation.

“We support all initiatives that serve the greater interest of the country and the port. Any step that undermines national priorities will not be taken,” he said.

He called on all stakeholders to cooperate in keeping the port operational, stressing that the ongoing disruptions are causing hardship to the general public.

“The present situation is undesirable, and the root causes must be addressed promptly to restore smooth operations,” he added.

Highlighting additional challenges ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, Sakhawat said that some traders are attempting to manipulate commodity prices by stockpiling goods in lighter vessels offshore.

“Such conspiracies not only affect fair trade but also harm consumers,” he said.

The adviser noted that mobile courts are being conducted daily by the Department of Shipping, with the participation of all relevant agencies, to curb illegal activities at the port.

He underscored that strict action will continue against anyone violating rules, ensuring that both trade and public interest are safeguarded.

Brig Gen Sakhawat concluded by urging traders, port authorities, and the public to cooperate fully, saying that maintaining the operational efficiency of Chattogram Port is vital for national interest and economic stability.
