Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan underscored the need for ethical, independent journalism, saying professionalism must guide the media at a time when public trust is critically important.

Speaking as the chief guest at the “Mass Media Festival 2026” at the Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Monday, organised by the July Revolutionary Journalists, she said journalists must rise above political loyalties and remain committed to truth and objectivity.

“The credibility of journalism depends on professional integrity. Partisan alignment weakens both the media and democracy,” she said.

Rizwana expressed concern that more than five decades after independence, Bangladesh still lacks a Media Commission and a comprehensive Broadcasting Ordinance.

She said the government is working to formulate both legal frameworks through consultation with journalists, policymakers and other stakeholders.

“Our aim is to finalise these ordinances with inclusive opinions. Even if time does not allow enactment, we want to leave behind complete draft frameworks,” she said, adding that the draft documents have already been made public through ministry websites to encourage feedback.

Calling for responsible conduct, the adviser urged journalists to avoid derogatory language and contribute to restoring dignity in the profession.

While acknowledging ideological differences within the media community, she stressed that factual accuracy and neutrality must remain journalism’s core principles.

Samsi Ara Zaman, mother of martyred journalist Tahir Zaman Priyo, said journalists must be provided with dignified livelihoods and proper institutional support to prevent exploitation by authoritarian forces.

Several senior media leaders and civil society representatives also addressed the event, highlighting the need for unity, safety and reform in the journalism sector.

During the programme, a dedicated hotline – 9644111444 - was launched to assist journalists covering the upcoming referendum and national election, ensuring timely support while on duty.

The event concluded with a renewed call for safeguarding press freedom through professionalism, reform and collective responsibility.
