The Election Commission (EC) has assured journalists will be allowed to carry mobile phones into polling centres during the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the accompanying referendum, effectively withdrawing the earlier restriction.
The announcement came on Monday, following concerns raised by media representatives and press freedom advocates.
The EC emphasised its commitment to ensuring that journalists can perform their duties without unnecessary hindrance while maintaining electoral transparency and security.
Previously, the EC had announced that mobile phones would not be permitted within a 400-yard radius of polling stations on 12 February, the scheduled date for both the referendum and the national parliamentary election. The restriction was set to apply to all individuals except four authorised personnel.
The announcement was made via a letter signed by the EC’s Senior Assistant Secretary Md Shahidul Islam which was sent to returning officers nationwide.
However, following discussions with media organisations and consideration of logistical and operational challenges, the EC clarified that the ban on journalists carrying mobile phones into polling centres will not be enforced.
The commission highlighted that media access is vital for transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
The EC has urged journalists to continue following all other election-day protocols, including maintaining order within polling premises and avoiding interference with the voting process.
By rescinding the mobile phone restriction for reporters, the commission reaffirmed its commitment to upholding press freedom while ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process across Bangladesh.
