Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumder on Tuesday said that the country’s food grain stock has reached a record high, surpassing 2.2 million metric tonnes, the highest in six years.
“The present food grain stock has exceeded the target for the country’s safe food grain stock, and it is a unique success in the food security of the nation,” he said while speaking at a press briefing at the Food Ministry here.
The briefing was also attended, among others, by Land Ministry Senior Secretary ASM Saleh Ahmed and Food Secretary M Feroz Sarker.
The present accumulated stock is nearly 834,000 tonnes more compared to the stock during the same period last year.
Majumder said, “Our safe food stock target is 1.35 million tonnes, while the government’s food warehouses currently hold more than 2.21 million tonnes of food grains. Now our food stock remains at the highest level.”
He expressed his satisfaction and said the interim government had set a target to maintain the food stock at a satisfactory level by the end of its tenure, and this target has now been achieved. “So, the new government will not require making any hasty decisions and can act steadily,” he added.
A comparative food stock report for the last six years, from 2021 to 2026, was also presented at the briefing. According to the report, the country’s rice stock till 10 February was over 1.876 million tonnes, wheat over 322,000 tonnes, and paddy over 107,000 tonnes.
The country’s food grain stock was only 669,000 tonnes in 2021, over 2.009 million tonnes in 2022, and 2.026 million tonnes in 2023.
However, the food grain stock declined to 1.684 million tonnes and 1.376 million tonnes in 2024 and 2025, respectively.
