The European Union Election Observer Mission (EU-EOM) paid a courtesy call on Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday, ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the July Charter referendum scheduled to be held on 12 February.
The delegation was led by Tomáš Zdechovský, member of the European Parliament and head of the delegation.
Other members of the mission included Chief Observer Ivars Ijabs; Lukas Mandl; Loránt Vincze; Leire Pajín; Șerban Dimitrie Sturdza; Michael McNamara; Catarina Vieira; Martin Bille Hermann; Inta Lase; Reginald Soenen; Nikos Salliarelis; Filipe Alcobia de Moraes; Benjamin Oppermann; Liviu-Adrian Natea; Tessel Giele; Riccardo Chelleri; Frederik Schumann; Marina Graser Lasic; and Michael Miller, ambassador and head of the EU delegation to Bangladesh.
The meeting also saw the participation of Lamiya Morshed, senior secretary and SDG coordinator, along with Md Mosharaf Hossain, director general of the West Europe and EU Wing of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the discussion, the delegation exchanged views with the Chief Adviser on preparations for the upcoming election, the referendum process, and measures to ensure transparency, inclusivity and a smooth voting experience. The EU observers expressed their interest in closely monitoring the electoral process and learning about the reforms being introduced under the interim government.
Chief Adviser Yunus highlighted the government’s efforts to maintain a free, fair and peaceful election environment, emphasising the importance of citizen participation and adherence to democratic principles. Both sides underlined the significance of international cooperation and transparency in strengthening public confidence in the electoral process.
The meeting concluded on a cordial note, with both parties expressing their commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration in ensuring credible elections in Bangladesh.
