Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday called on citizens to make the upcoming 12 February election a defining moment for the country, describing the day as an opportunity to “birth a new Bangladesh.”
In a nationally televised address, Prof Yunus emphasised the power of the individual vote, saying that the choices made at the ballot box will determine the nation’s future trajectory in governance, education, justice and employment.
“The key to the country’s future is in your hands. Use it wisely,” he said, urging voters to approach the elections with awareness, responsibility and hope.
Highlighting the importance of the concurrent referendum, Prof Yunus noted that the vote is more than a procedural formality - it is a decisive tool to shape the rights and security of families, the next generation, and the nation as a whole.
“Your decisions today will influence the future of Bangladesh for decades to come. This is a moment when the rights and duties of every citizen converge,” he said, encouraging voters to participate actively and decisively.
The Chief Adviser stressed that the upcoming election must be conducted freely and fairly, leaving no room for manipulation or “election engineering.” He called on citizens to maintain unity and civic responsibility while exercising their franchise.
Prof Yunus also appealed to voters to make the polling day festive, attending stations with family and friends, and to cast their votes confidently and without fear. “Let us turn this historic day into a celebration of democracy and shared responsibility,” he said.
He reassured the public that once the elections conclude, the interim government would hand over power promptly to the newly elected administration, marking the successful end of its tenure. “We will welcome the new government with respect and support, and return to our duties, proud of the democratic process we helped facilitate,” he added.
