The United Nations has called for the safe, inclusive and meaningful participation of women in Bangladesh’s upcoming parliamentary elections, emphasising the need to protect them from intimidation, harassment and digital violence to ensure credible democratic processes.
Ahead of the 13th national parliamentary election on 12 February, the UN highlighted that participation in public life is a fundamental right, including for women and girls, women with disabilities, women from minority communities, and gender-diverse individuals who may face heightened barriers or gender-based violence.
In a statement issued ahead of the polls, the UN reaffirmed its long-standing advocacy for women’s representation and leadership, noting its support for the Bangladesh Election Commission’s efforts to strengthen women’s electoral participation.
The organisation stressed that all voters, including women, must be able to participate as candidates and voters without fear of intimidation, discrimination, online abuse or reprisals.
Calling on political leaders, parties and supporters, the UN urged a zero-tolerance approach to harassment and violence against women throughout the electoral process. It expressed confidence that authorities would uphold security and the rule of law, safeguarding the rights and safety of all citizens.
The UN reiterated its commitment to supporting Bangladesh in conducting inclusive, peaceful and credible elections.
