Two people, including an assistant presiding officer, were killed and six others seriously injured in a head-on collision between a mini-truck and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw on the Sherpur-Jamalpur highway in the Shimultali area of Nandir Bazar, Sadar Upazila, on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as Md Rukunuzzaman Rukon, 30, a resident of Sarishabari Upazila in Jamalpur, and Mahfuza Akhtar, 19, wife of M Nirab, a resident of the Katlamari area under Madarganj Upazila, Jamalpur district.
Police reported that the speeding mini-truck, travelling from Sarishabari towards Sherpur Sadar, collided head-on with the CNG auto-rickshaw. One victim died at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries en route to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
Six passengers who sustained serious injuries were admitted to Sherpur District Sadar Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Officer-in-Charge of Sherpur Sadar Police Station, Md Sohel Rana, confirmed the incident and stated that legal action will be taken following an investigation into the accident.
