The Bangladesh Army on Wednesday warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The warning was issued at a press briefing held in the afternoon at Shibbari intersection in Khulna, following a joint patrol exercise carried out by various law enforcement agencies as part of election security preparations.
Addressing the briefing, Lieutenant Colonel Tayef, Commanding Officer of Army Camp (17 Bir), said the Army had been working at the grassroots level across Khulna district for the past one and a half years.
He said the Army, Navy, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Coast Guard, Police, intelligence agencies and the Election Commission were jointly coordinating to ensure a peaceful and orderly environment during the election.
Lieutenant Colonel Tayef added that joint forces had set up camps at multiple locations in Khulna since 6 February to carry out security duties ahead of polling.
“Necessary measures have been taken to ensure voters can cast their ballots in a safe and secure environment. Everyone will be able to vote without fear,” he said.
He noted that surveillance had been strengthened at all polling centres and that security forces would be able to respond quickly to any situation if required.
“If anyone attempts to disrupt the election, strict action will be taken against them,” he reiterated.
The joint patrol exercise at Shibbari intersection formed part of the wider security arrangements being put in place ahead of the national polls.
