A festive atmosphere is prevailing across the district ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election and Referendum, scheduled to be held on Thursday.

The district administration, together with law enforcement agencies, has completed extensive preparations to ensure that the election is conducted in a free, fair and impartial manner.

At least 470 polling centres have been brought under closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance as part of enhanced security measures.

Authorities have identified 89 polling centres as high-risk in nine of the district’s 12 upazilas across its five parliamentary constituencies. In addition, 157 centres have been categorised as remote, requiring special logistical and security arrangements.

Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Dr Mohammad Ileas Mia said that a mobile team of law enforcement officers, including a magistrate, would remain deployed near each high-risk polling centre.

“If any problem arises, the team will be able to reach the centre quickly,” he said.

He added that the identified centres would be continuously monitored through CCTV cameras, while three police personnel and armed Ansar members, led by a sub-inspector, would be stationed at each polling centre to maintain law and order.

Eight of the district’s 12 upazilas are surrounded by haor wetlands, presenting unique challenges. A total of 2,080,335 voters are expected to cast their ballots across the five parliamentary constituencies in this year’s election.

Dr Mia noted that Sunamganj has historically remained peaceful, with no record of major political violence. However, he said the district’s geographical features — particularly the haor areas and remote border regions — pose challenges in transporting election materials and ensuring rapid communication during polling.
