The United Nations has urged authorities to ensure safe, inclusive and meaningful participation of women in Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Election, emphasising that such participation is a fundamental democratic right.
In a statement ahead of Thursday’s election, the UN office in Bangladesh highlighted the need to guarantee voting and candidacy rights for all, including women with disabilities, women from minority communities, gender-diverse individuals and those at higher risk of discrimination or gender-based violence.
The UN expressed concern over rising violence and harassment targeting female candidates and voters, including online abuse. Women involved in public life, including political leaders, journalists, activists and human rights defenders, have reported increasing incidents of cyberbullying, deepfakes and misuse of altered or sexually suggestive content generated through artificial intelligence.
The statement reaffirmed the UN’s support to the Bangladesh Election Commission in enhancing women’s representation and leadership, ensuring that female voters and candidates can participate without fear, discrimination, or retaliation.
The UN called on political parties, leaders and their supporters to refrain from harassment, intimidation, or violence against women during the electoral process, emphasising that women’s safety is essential for an inclusive democracy.
Expressing confidence in the authorities, the UN said necessary measures will continue to be taken to uphold the rule of law, protect citizens’ rights and secure safe participation for all.
It reaffirmed its commitment to support the government in safeguarding the rights and security of every individual during the election.
