Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday hailed the ongoing general election and referendum as a landmark moment in the nation’s history, describing them as a rare opportunity to shape a “new Bangladesh.”

After casting his ballot at the Gulshan Model School and College Polling Centre in the capital in the morning, Prof Yunus said the day marked a decisive break from the past and the start of a renewed national journey.

“With the process that has begun today, we are stepping away from old chapters and opening the door to a new Bangladesh,” he said. “This is a moment to celebrate - a day that feels like the nation’s rebirth.”

He emphasised that while electing representatives is crucial, the referendum carries equal weight in defining the country’s future direction.

According to him, active public participation in both processes is essential to strengthening the foundations of a re-imagined state.

Calling the day one of the happiest of his life, the Chief Adviser described it as a time of collective joy and liberation for citizens across the country.

He also noted the festive atmosphere nationwide, saying people were treating the occasion like a national celebration, comparable to the spirit and excitement of Eid.
