Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday expressed gratitude to the nation following the peaceful conclusion of voting in the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum on implementing the July National Charter.
In a statement issued by his press wing after polling ended at 4:30pm, Prof Yunus described the day as a demonstration of the country’s enduring democratic spirit.
“The spontaneous participation of voters, the responsible role of political parties, the restraint of candidates, and the professionalism of all institutions involved in the process reflect our firm commitment to democracy,” he said.
The CA noted that by exercising their constitutional rights, citizens actively shaped the country’s future direction.
He extended special thanks to the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, armed forces, civil administration, election observers, media personnel and all officials engaged in conducting the polls.
According to him, the successful completion of such a large-scale democratic exercise was made possible through their dedication and coordinated efforts.
Prof Yunus also urged political parties and candidates to maintain democratic values after the announcement of results.
“Differences will naturally exist, but in the greater national interest we must uphold tolerance, respect and unity,” he said.
Describing the election as one of the most peaceful and festive in the country’s history, he said Bangladesh had once again affirmed that sovereignty lies with its people.
“This marks the beginning of a new chapter,” he added. “If we can sustain this spirit, our democracy will continue to grow stronger.”
Calling for collective efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, the CA said the nation must now move forward together towards building an accountable, inclusive and justice-based state.
