The United Nations has congratulated Bangladesh on successfully conducting its 13th Parliamentary Election and nationwide referendum, emphasising the importance of national cohesion and democratic governance.
Speaking at a regular briefing at UN headquarters on Friday, Secretary General António Guterres’ spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the UN encourages all political actors in Bangladesh to build on the momentum created by the elections to strengthen national unity, uphold democratic norms and respect the rule of law.
“The secretary general congratulates the people of Bangladesh for holding legislative election and a referendum. While the UN did not act as an observer, it remains committed to supporting Bangladesh in its efforts to achieve a peaceful and prosperous future,” Dujarric said.
He also highlighted the importance of ensuring human rights for all citizens, including minority communities, as the country moves forward with inclusive reforms.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus held phone conversations on Saturday with BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and NCP Convener Nahid Islam.
He called on all political stakeholders to collaborate and meet the aspirations of the people.
Yunus praised the parties for their responsible conduct during and after the election, and expressed hope that such cooperation will continue to strengthen democratic processes in Bangladesh.
The Election Commission (EC) has published gazette notifications for 297 Members of Parliament, while voting had been held in 299 of 300 constituencies on Thursday. The election in Sherpur-3 was cancelled due to the death of a candidate, and EC postponed results in Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 constituencies in line with court directives.
