Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Bangladesh’s incoming government, following the BNP’s decisive victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
A diplomatic source in New Delhi confirmed on Sunday that India has received the invitation.
“Yes, we have received the invitation from Professor Yunus. Discussions are ongoing regarding the level of representation from the government of India,” the source said.
However, scheduling constraints may affect Prime Minister Modi’s attendance. The India-AI Impact Summit 2026 is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from 16 to 20 February, coinciding with the timing of the ceremony in Dhaka.
According to another Delhi-based source, around 20 heads of state, including French President Emmanuel Macron, are expected to attend the summit, making it unlikely that Modi will travel to Bangladesh. India is expected to send a high-level representative instead.
Sources indicated that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri are likely to visit Dhaka, although an official confirmation is yet to be announced.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s new cabinet is scheduled to take oath at 4pm on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad. President Mohammed Shahabuddin will administer the oath.
China will be represented at the ceremony by its Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen, according to diplomatic sources.
The swearing-in will formally mark the beginning of the new BNP-led government’s tenure.
