The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Bangladesh on key areas, including economic growth, climate action, migration and security in the wake of the country’s 13th Parliamentary Election.
A spokesperson from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) welcomed the 12 February election, describing the peaceful and orderly electoral process as a “significant step forward” for Bangladesh and its people.
“We look forward to the new government advancing democratic, economic and social reforms,” the official said, highlighting the importance of consolidating democracy alongside development.
The British High Commission in Dhaka also conveyed its congratulations to BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman and his party for their electoral victory, while extending greetings to all citizens as Bangladesh embarks on a new political chapter.
“We look forward to working together on our shared priorities: economic growth, migration, climate and security,” the statement added.
The UK’s comments come amid a wave of international recognition of Bangladesh’s election outcome, which saw the BNP secure a landslide victory, paving the way for Tarique Rahman to assume office as prime minister.
Observers noted that the smooth conduct of the election, along with high voter participation, was a positive indicator for democratic governance in the country.
British officials emphasised the significance of continued engagement and constructive dialogue between the two nations, underscoring that cooperation on economic and environmental issues will remain a central focus of bilateral relations.
