Information and Broadcasting Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan on Sunday clarified that no journalist was imprisoned solely for expressing opinions during the 18-month tenure of the interim government.

Responding to questions from reporters at the Bangladesh Secretariat, Rizwana said, “I am not aware of any journalist being arrested purely for criticism. Any legal action taken against individuals followed due process and was based on specific information available to the authorities.”

When asked about two journalists who were reportedly detained, she emphasised that their arrests were not related to their views or social media activity. “The state machinery had valid reasons behind these actions,” she added.

Rizwana underscored that many had openly criticised the caretaker administration without facing arrest.

On evaluating the interim government’s performance, she said, “It would be inappropriate to label the tenure a success or failure. I have done my best, and ultimately, the people will judge.”

Regarding Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Fayez Ahmed Tayeb, Rizwana noted that he had been abroad for over a year and returned home only to complete his official responsibilities.

“He simply went back to his family after fulfilling his duties. There is no other explanation,” she said.

Rizwana also reiterated the importance of accountable governance, urging citizens to vote “yes” for moral leadership and transparency.

On future elections, she confirmed that national polls will be held under a non-partisan caretaker government, following a court directive, ensuring that the electoral process remains impartial and credible.
