In his farewell address on Monday evening, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus urged all Bangladeshis to take an active role in shaping the nation’s future, stressing that the interim government’s work was only the beginning of a long journey towards a stronger democracy.
“We inherited a country in crisis. We started not from zero, but from minus,” Prof Yunus said, recalling the challenges following the July 2024 Mass Uprising.
“Our job was to clear the rubble, rebuild institutions, and set the stage for reform. But the real work of building a new Bangladesh now rests with all of us,” he said.
Highlighting the progress made during the caretaker government’s tenure, Professor Yunus spoke of efforts to restore accountability, protect citizen rights, strengthen governance and create a foundation for a truly democratic state.
“These reforms are only the beginning. The future of Bangladesh depends on the participation, vigilance, and courage of every citizen,” he added.
Professor Yunus called on people to uphold democratic values, ensure transparency and hold leaders accountable.
“Even though we are stepping down, the responsibility to advance democracy, freedom and justice is shared by all of us,” he said.
Concluding on an inspiring note, he urged the nation to continue the momentum built over the past 18 months.
“Together, we can turn our vision of a just, accountable and citizen-centred Bangladesh into reality,” he said.
