All newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have been sworn in following the party’s decisive victory in the country’s 13th parliamentary election.
The oath-taking ceremony was held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka on Tuesday morning. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin administered the oath at 10:43 local time in the parliament’s Oath Room. The Secretary of the Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat, Kaniz Moula, conducted the formal proceedings.
After taking the oath of office, the newly elected lawmakers signed the official register, formally assuming their parliamentary duties.
According to official results, the BNP secured 209 seats in the 299-member Jatiya Sangsad in the polls held on 12 February. The outcome gives the party a commanding majority in the new parliament.
Several of BNP’s political allies also won representation. Gano Odhikar Parishad, Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) and Gano Sanghati Andolon each secured one seat.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the main opposition party, winning 68 seats. Among its alliance partners, the National Citizen Party (NCP) won six seats, Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis secured two, and Khelafat Majlish obtained one. Islami Andolon Bangladesh won a single seat, while independent candidates claimed victory in seven constituencies.
On Friday night, the Election Commission published the official gazette for 297 of the 299 parliamentary constituencies contested in the 13th national election.
However, the announcement of results for two constituencies — Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 — has been postponed. In addition, voting in the Sherpur-3 constituency was suspended following the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate.
The swearing-in marks the formal beginning of the new parliamentary term, setting the stage for the formation of the next government under the BNP’s leadership.
