Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman will serve as the opposition leader in the 13th parliament, while National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam has been appointed as the opposition chief whip, opposition leaders announced on Tuesday.

The decisions were made during a meeting of the 11-party opposition alliance, held after 297 newly elected lawmakers took their oaths at the Jatiya Sangsad.

Jamaat Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher will serve as the deputy leader of the opposition.

Md Abdul Karim, Jamaat’s chief in Gaibandha District and the lawmaker elected from Gaibandha-2 constituency, conveyed the decisions to reporters.

He also noted that a joint press conference by the 11-party alliance will be held soon to formally announce the appointments.

The appointments reflect the alliance’s efforts to organise its parliamentary leadership immediately following the oath-taking of the newly elected members.

The opposition alliance has pledged to play an active role in parliament, engaging with legislative processes while maintaining oversight of the new government. The leadership structure aims to coordinate strategies among the alliance’s members and ensure a unified voice on key national issues.

It is to be noted that Dr Shafiqur Rahman was elected from Dhaka-15 constituency, Nahid Islam from Dhaka-11 and Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher from Cumilla-11.
