Chinese Premier of the State Council Li Qiang extended his congratulations to newly sworn-in Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Tuesday and expressed his readiness to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
In a message to Prime Minister Tarique, Li highlighted the importance of deepening the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and China, emphasising the potential for high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
He also called for continued exchanges across all sectors, aiming to elevate the Bangladesh-China Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership to new heights, bringing tangible benefits to the people of both nations.
“China and Bangladesh are neighbours with a history of friendship and strategic partnership,” Li said, noting that the two countries have maintained mutual respect and equality since establishing diplomatic relations 51 years ago.
“Through consistent cooperation and mutually beneficial initiatives, the relationship has set a fine example for international exchanges,” he added.
Li also conveyed China’s support for the new government of Bangladesh, assuring that Beijing hopes for smooth governance and stability under Prime Minister Tarique’s leadership.
Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister on Tuesday afternoon, taking the oath from President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban at around 4:15 pm. Earlier in the day, the BNP Parliamentary Party unanimously elected Tarique as its parliamentary party leader, cementing his role at the helm of the new government.
The Chinese premier’s message underscores the importance of continued collaboration between Dhaka and Beijing, signalling a promising start to the BNP-led administration’s foreign policy engagement and bilateral partnership with one of Bangladesh’s closest neighbours.
