Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has extended a formal invitation to newly elected Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, along with his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and their daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman, to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
In his letter, Modi congratulated Tarique on his electoral victory, describing it as a testament to the trust and confidence the people of Bangladesh have placed in his leadership.
The invitation followed the swearing-in of the new Bangladeshi government, led by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Representing the Government of India at the ceremony, Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla met Prime Minister Tarique to convey Modi’s greetings and extend the official invitation.
He was accompanied by Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
During the meeting, both leaders expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral cooperation with a people-focused agenda to enhance the wellbeing of citizens in both countries.
The discussions emphasised the importance of deepening relations in trade, culture and strategic partnership.
The Indian delegation arrived in Dhaka aboard a special aircraft of the Indian Air Force, landing at a Bangladesh Air Force base. They were formally received by Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs Secretary Dr Md Nazrul Islam, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Md Riaz Hamidullah.
Earlier on the same day, Tarique Rahman was sworn in as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban around 4:15pm. Prior to the ceremony, the BNP unanimously elected Tarique as the leader of its parliamentary party.
The visit and interaction underscore the continuing commitment of both India and Bangladesh to maintain strong diplomatic and people-centred ties.
