Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has sworn in three different governments over three consecutive years, marking one of the most turbulent political phases in the country’s recent history.

On Tuesday afternoon, the President administered the oath to Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister at the South Plaza of Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban. Members of the new cabinet, including ministers and state ministers under Tarique’s leadership, were also sworn in.

This ceremony represents the third government formation overseen by Shahabuddin within three years. In 2024, he administered the oath to an Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina following that year’s general election. However, the administration fell on 5 August 2024 amid a mass uprising spearheaded by students and sections of the public.

On 8 August 2024, the President once again fulfilled his constitutional responsibilities by swearing in an interim administration headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. That government was tasked with restoring stability, carrying out reforms and preparing the country for fresh election.

With the installation of the Tarique Rahman government in 2026 following the 13th Parliamentary Election, Shahabuddin has now formally administered oaths to governments in 2024, 2025 and 2026 - an unprecedented sequence in the country’s contemporary political landscape.

Observers note that the rapid turnover highlights both the depth of recent political upheaval and the pivotal constitutional role of the presidency during periods of national transition.
