Newly appointed Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has outlined an ambitious reform agenda, saying rebuilding institutions and reinforcing democratic practices will be the government’s top priority.
Speaking to reporters after assuming charge at the Secretariat, Mirza Fakhrul said the administration is committed to revitalising local government bodies to ensure transparent, people-focused service delivery.
“Our goal is to make local government institutions stronger and free from corruption so that services truly reach citizens at their doorsteps,” he said.
Also serving as Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Fakhrul stressed that democracy will guide every step of the government’s work.
Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, he said the cabinet is united behind a broader national vision centred on rebuilding institutions and consolidating democratic governance.
He pointed out that numerous posts in district councils, upazilas and municipalities remain vacant, weakening local administration.
The government, he said, will initiate the process to fill these positions through elections as soon as possible.
“It may not happen overnight, but we will begin immediately,” he added.
Addressing concerns over corruption and governance failures, Fakhrul said reviewing past irregularities and ensuring accountability would be a priority. The ministry will examine institutional weaknesses and take corrective measures to restore public confidence.
On the economic front, he expressed optimism, noting that macroeconomic stability is gradually improving and the banking sector is moving towards greater discipline.
He also indicated that the cabinet would take firm decisions to stabilise prices ahead of Ramadan.
Mirza Fakhrul further acknowledged the Advisory Council’s role over the past 18 months, saying it managed a critical transition period and introduced measures that paved the way for democratic restoration.
