Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Wednesday emphasised that the development of the media sector in Bangladesh cannot be achieved unless the challenges faced by journalists are addressed.

Speaking at the National Press Club during a courtesy visit and meeting with media representatives, the minister said ensuring the welfare and safety of journalists is crucial for fostering a vibrant, independent and responsible media environment.

“Media development is impossible without addressing the problems of journalists,” Swapan said, “Their protection, fair working conditions and professional growth are essential for ensuring the media can perform its role in society effectively.”

The minister also highlighted the importance of independent journalism in maintaining transparency, accountability and democracy in the country.

“A strong and free media is a pillar of our democracy. We must create conditions where journalists can work without fear or pressure,” he added.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yeaser Khan Chowdhury was present during the visit.

The meeting brought together senior media leaders, including National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists Secretary General Kader Gani Chowdhury and Dhaka Union of Journalists President Shahidul Islam, along with journalists covering BNP affairs.

Swapan assured that the ministry would work closely with journalists’ associations to identify and resolve issues such as safety, wage concerns and access to resources, ensuring that media personnel are empowered to contribute to the country’s information landscape.

The minister’s remarks come at a time when the newly formed BNP-led government has vowed to strengthen institutions and governance, with the media playing a critical role in the democratic process.
