Muslims across Bangladesh will commence fasting on Thursday as the crescent moon was sighted in the country on Wednesday, marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan in the year 1447 Hijri.

The announcement was made following a meeting of the National Moon Sighting Committee held in the conference room of the Islamic Foundation at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka on Wednesday evening.

The meeting was presided over by Religious Affairs Minister Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, who confirmed the sighting and the official start of the fasting period.

With this declaration, Muslims across the nation will observe the daily fast from dawn (Sehri) until sunset (Iftar), practicing restraint and self-discipline as part of spiritual devotion.

In addition to fasting, the nightly Taraweeh prayers, a key ritual during Ramadan, will begin on Wednesday night in mosques throughout the country. These prayers are an integral part of the holy month, providing an opportunity for collective worship and reflection.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is considered a time for spiritual growth, charity and heightened devotion. During this period, Muslims engage in acts of worship, seek forgiveness and strengthen communal ties.

The official moon sighting ensures that the observance of Ramadan in Bangladesh aligns with Islamic practices and provides clarity to millions of followers preparing for this spiritually significant month.
