Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday stressed the need for collective reform and institutional strengthening to build an accountable and prosperous Bangladesh.

Speaking at a views-exchange meeting at the conference room of the Local Government Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said individuals, society and the state are interconnected and must work in coordination to ensure good governance and sustainable development.

“If we work as a united team, setting aside all differences, it will be possible to establish good governance and build a prosperous society,” he said.

The minister said the government is implementing the vision and policy plans of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at a time when the country is facing economic strain and weakened state structures. He acknowledged that several institutions had lost effectiveness and public confidence over the past 15 years.

To address these challenges, the government has taken multifaceted initiatives aimed at revitalising and strengthening state institutions, he added. According to him, rebuilding public trust is central to reform.

“Strengthening institutions is not merely about administrative restructuring; it is about restoring public trust. Effective institutions are the foundation of a strong and development-driven state,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul emphasised that coordinated efforts among government bodies, local authorities and other stakeholders are essential to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the reform process.

Highlighting rural development priorities, he said the hardship faced by rural communities is a concrete social reality that demands policy-driven intervention. He stated that generating employment opportunities in rural areas is a key strategy to reduce distress and support balanced development.

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam also addressed the meeting, saying the ministry works directly with grassroots communities and must ensure development and democratic accountability through inclusive cooperation.

He said building a corruption-free state requires unified action and described the government’s election manifesto and 31-point agenda as a social contract with the people rather than mere political commitments.

Secretary of the ministry Md Rezaul Maksud Jahedi presented an overview of the ministry’s activities, outlining ongoing administrative and development initiatives. Senior officials and heads of subordinate departments were present at the meeting.

The discussion signals a renewed policy focus on institutional reform, rural development and governance accountability as part of the government’s broader state-building agenda.
