The Rapid Action Battalion has stepped up security arrangements across Bangladesh ahead of the observance of Great Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day on February 21.
RAB Director General AKM Shahidur Rahman said the elite force has deployed personnel nationwide, including in the capital, to ensure a peaceful and orderly commemoration. The enhanced security measures began on Thursday and will remain in place through February 22.
Briefing journalists at the Central Shaheed Minar on the Dhaka University campus, the RAB chief said comprehensive preparations have been taken to prevent any untoward incidents, with particular focus on the main memorial site where the President and the Prime Minister are scheduled to pay tribute to the Language Movement martyrs.
He said RAB units would work alongside other law enforcement agencies, establishing observation posts, watch towers and checkpoints within their operational areas. Surveillance around the Shaheed Minar has been intensified, with CCTV and IP cameras installed to monitor both inner and outer perimeters through dedicated control rooms.
Specialised teams, including the Bomb Disposal Unit and Dog Squad, will conduct security sweeps of the premises, while RAB’s Special Force will remain on standby around the clock to respond to any emergency.
Security has also been reinforced at Shaheed Minars in metropolitan areas, divisional cities, districts and upazilas where wreath-laying ceremonies, discussions and cultural programmes are planned as part of the Amar Ekushey observances.
According to the RAB chief, intelligence monitoring has been expanded, including the deployment of plainclothes officers, to deter any attempt by banned organisations or disruptive elements to create unrest at memorial sites.
A central control room at RAB Headquarters will coordinate nationwide operations, he added, working in close cooperation with local representatives and other security agencies.
Rahman urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement and to promptly report any suspicious activity to nearby patrol officers or battalion commanders.
February 21 holds deep national significance, commemorating the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement. Authorities say the enhanced security measures are intended to ensure the day is observed with dignity and without disruption across the country.
