Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has confirmed that there is no security threat surrounding the Ekushey February programmes in Dhaka, as authorities finalise extensive preparations for Shaheed Day and International Mother Language Day at the Central Shaheed Minar.
DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali said on Friday that approximately 15,000 police personnel would be deployed in and around the Central Shaheed Minar area to ensure a safe and orderly observance on 21 February. He made the remarks after inspecting security arrangements at the memorial, where thousands are expected to gather to pay tribute to the language martyrs.
The DMP chief said a multi-layered security framework has been implemented, involving uniformed police, specialised units, intelligence teams, other law enforcement agencies and trained volunteers. The plan aims to maintain public order, protect the sanctity of the Shaheed Minar and ensure uninterrupted public access under controlled movement guidelines.
Specialised units, including SWAT, the dog squad, the bomb disposal unit and the crime scene team, will remain on round-the-clock standby. Intelligence surveillance and cyber monitoring have also been reinforced to address any potential risks in advance, reflecting heightened vigilance by the capital’s law enforcement authorities.
Referring to the recently held national election, Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali said voters exercised their democratic rights peacefully and in a disciplined manner without security disruptions. He expressed confidence that the Ekushey February programmes would similarly conclude without incident under the current security strategy.
Security arrangements extend beyond the Shaheed Minar premises, with police maintaining strict vigilance across Dhaka city. Movement control measures have been introduced to manage large crowds and minimise congestion in the Dhaka University area.
According to the DMP guidelines, entry to the Central Shaheed Minar will be permitted only through the Palashi Mor–Jagannath Hall crossing route. Visitors must exit via the Romana crossing towards Doel Chattar or Chankharpool. No alternative entry or exit routes will be allowed.
Members of the public have been advised not to carry sharp objects, flammable materials or explosive substances. Visitors have also been urged to follow designated routes, maintain discipline and leave promptly after paying tribute to allow others to enter the memorial premises.
To facilitate security and traffic management, diversions will be enforced at key entry points to the Dhaka University area from Friday evening. Teachers, students, officers and employees residing in the area have been requested to comply with traffic instructions issued by law enforcement authorities.
The DMP said the comprehensive security deployment reflects coordinated administrative and policy-level planning to ensure that Ekushey February in Dhaka is observed with dignity, safety and national respect.
