President Mohammed Shahabuddin paid rich tributes on Saturday to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement, marking Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day.
The Head of State paid homage by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital at one minute past midnight.
President Shahabuddin reached the Central Shaheed Minar four minutes before the zero hour.
On his arrival, he was received by the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan.
The President proceeded slowly towards the altar of the Central Shaheed Minar as the historic immortal song of Amar Ekushey, “Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February… Ami Ki Bhulitey Pari?", was played.
He then stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect for the memories of the Language Movement heroes.
