After paying homage to the Language Movement martyrs, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday offered prayers seeking forgiveness for the martyrs while standing on the premises of the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital, setting what many described as a unique precedent in the country’s history.
Traditionally, the Head of State and the Head of Government leave the Shaheed Minar immediately after placing wreaths.
The prayer (doa) was conducted by the Senior Imam and Khatib of the Dhaka University Central Mosque, Hafez Mowlana Nazir Mahmud. He led prayers seeking forgiveness for the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War, the 1990 anti-autocracy movement and the 2024 July Uprising.
Special prayers were also offered seeking divine blessings for Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former three-time Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The prayer further sought the welfare of the country and success for the present government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Earlier, the premier had paid homage to the Language Movement martyrs by placing a wreath at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12:08am.
After the doa, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman again paid tribute to the martyrs by placing separate wreaths on behalf of his Cabinet, his party, and the family members of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman—the proclaimer of the country’s independence—and former three-time Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
