Minister for Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Livestock Amin Ur Rashid on Saturday said Bangladesh would emerge as a country of free thought and freedom of speech, expressing optimism about the future under the newly elected government.
“A democratic government has come to power through a fair election after a long time. So people have many expectations from this government,” he told journalists at the Cumilla Circuit House.
“Future Bangladesh will be a country of free thought and speech. The incumbent government will obviously work towards this goal,” he added, seeking cooperation from all quarters to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the people.
Highlighting the industrial growth of Cumilla, the minister said the district has transformed into an industrial hub over the years.
He noted that he had established the first export-oriented factory in the area, which helped pave the way for rapid industrial expansion.
“There has been a kind of industrial revolution in Cumilla. Its progress will continue,” he said.
Referring to the region’s agricultural legacy, Amin Ur Rashid said Cumilla was a pioneer in modern farming practices.
He recalled that BARD founder Dr Akhtar Hamid Khan introduced the irrigation initiative known as the “Cumilla Model,” which continues to receive appreciation at home and abroad.
The minister said his cabinet position is voluntary and that he would not draw any salary, allowances or government transport.
He also pledged to work towards fulfilling the longstanding demand for establishing Cumilla Division and to restore the district’s reputation as an educational hub.
Local BNP leaders and senior officials were also present at that time.
