Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan on Saturday said the government has taken steps to revise the Wage Board for media professionals as part of broader efforts to address challenges in the media sector.
Speaking at a discussion meeting organised by Barishal District administration at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium to mark the Martyrs’ Day, the minister said work to modernise the Wage Board is progressing on a priority basis.
“We have begun addressing the issues facing the media sector. The Wage Board is receiving serious consideration and we want to make it more time-appropriate as soon as possible. Any concerns related to journalists will be resolved promptly,” he said.
He also announced that family cards would be distributed within this month, adding that preparations are being completed to implement the government’s commitment.
Referring to concerns over mob violence, the minister said certain groups were attempting to encourage such activities and claimed that some individuals in key administrative positions were covertly supporting them.
“We have detailed information about these matters. Under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, we know how to govern and we remain accountable to the people,” he said.
Later on, during an interaction with journalists at the Barishal Press Club, Swapan urged media professionals to exercise responsibility in reporting.
He advised journalists to carefully distinguish between information that should be made public and matters that require discretion, saying credibility and professional judgment are key to career growth in journalism.
