The Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi has resumed accepting tourist visa applications from Indian citizens, two months after the category was suspended.
A senior official at the mission’s visa section said applications began being received again on Saturday. The notice announcing the temporary suspension, which had been displayed at visa counters in the Chanakyapuri Diplomatic Zone since December, was removed earlier in the day.
The official clarified that the suspension had applied only to tourist visas. Other categories continued on a limited basis under specific conditions.
“Only tourist visa issuance was halted and certain restrictions were placed on other categories. Since visa services operate on a reciprocal basis, business and work visas were kept outside the purview of the restrictions. There is no need to ‘resume’ those categories,” the official said.
Even during the suspension, the High Commission processed visas in emergency cases and for special purposes. The official noted that several Indian journalists were granted visas to cover Bangladesh’s recent parliamentary election.
The move comes a day after Aniruddha Das, India’s assistant high commissioner in Sylhet, said steps were being taken to fully restore all visa services for Bangladeshis at Indian missions.
Visa and consular operations between the two countries had been largely halted in December amid strained diplomatic relations and rising tensions over various issues.
