The inaugural session of Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliament is expected to convene in March, with proceedings likely to begin around 12 March or slightly earlier, according to Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed.

The minister shared the update in a statement posted on his verified Facebook account on Saturday night, indicating that preparations are under way for the first sitting of the newly elected legislature.

The opening session is expected to include several key formalities central to the functioning of parliament. Lawmakers will elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker, positions that play a critical role in presiding over parliamentary proceedings and maintaining order in the House.

In addition, ordinances issued during the tenure of the interim government are set to be placed before parliament for consideration, as required under constitutional procedures. A condolence motion is also anticipated as part of the traditional agenda of a new session.

The convening of the first session will formally mark the beginning of legislative activities under the 13th parliament, setting the stage for debates, lawmaking and oversight functions in the coming months.

While an exact date has yet to be officially gazetted, the Home Minister’s remarks suggest that mid-March is the likely timeframe for the start of parliamentary business.
