Chattogram Hill Tracts (CHT) Affairs Minister Dipen Dewan on Sunday pledged to turn the CHT into a corruption-free region under a strict zero-tolerance policy.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with the chairman and members of the Khagrachhari Hill District Council at the CHT Complex auditorium in Dhaka, the minister said his role was to serve the people rather than wield authority.
“I do not want to be the lord of the three hill districts; I want to be a servant of the people. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has given me this responsibility to ensure services reach every citizen of the hill districts,” he said.
Dipen Dewan stressed that no community in the region would be excluded from development initiatives.
He said participation from all ethnic and social groups would be ensured and equal opportunities created for everyone living in the hills.
The minister directed officials to guarantee fair distribution of resources and to maintain transparency, accountability and sincerity in all administrative and development activities.
He also urged residents not to pay attention to rumours, calling for unity and cooperation to accelerate progress in the region.
At the outset of the programme, members of the Khagrachhari Hill District Council, led by its Chairman Shefalika Tripura, welcomed the minister with garlands and congratulated him on his appointment, expressing gratitude to the government for entrusting him with the portfolio.
