Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pranay Verma on Sunday said New Delhi is keen to strengthen people-centric cooperation with Bangladesh across all sectors through constructive engagement with the new government.
Speaking after a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, the envoy said people-to-people exchanges remain a key pillar of bilateral relations and both sides should work together in a positive and forward-looking manner based on mutual benefit.
“We look forward to strengthening our people-centric cooperation in all domains, working together in a positive and constructive way, grounded in mutual interest,” he said, adding that such engagement would help deepen historic ties between the two neighbours.
Verma also held a separate meeting with State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He described both meetings as courtesy calls following the formation of the new government and said they provided an opportunity for an initial exchange of views.
The Indian High Commissioner noted recent high-level communications between the two countries following Bangladesh’s national election.
He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory message to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on 13 February, and the two leaders later spoke by phone.
He added that India’s Speaker of Lok Sabha attended the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka on 17 February and delivered a letter from Prime Minister Modi during a bilateral meeting with the Prime Minister.
Verma said these interactions reflect India’s desire to build on long-standing ties and expand cooperation in areas of shared interest.
He reiterated India’s commitment to supporting a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh.
