The government has granted approval to withdraw 1,006 cases that were filed against opposition leaders and activists during the past 17 years, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.

He described the cases as politically motivated and aimed at harassing opposition figures and suppressing dissent under the previous administration.

The minister said a detailed review was conducted before the decision was finalised to ensure that genuine legal matters were properly distinguished from cases allegedly filed for political purposes.

“The scrutiny process involved careful examination of the records before approval was given,” he said, adding that the withdrawal will now proceed in line with established legal procedures. Relevant authorities have been instructed to take necessary steps to implement the decision.

Officials said the move is part of broader efforts by the government to review controversial legal actions taken during the earlier regime and to restore confidence in the justice system.

Authorities believe that clearing cases identified as harassment suits will contribute to strengthening democratic norms and ensuring fairness.

The ministry also indicated that further reviews may be conducted where necessary to assess additional cases under similar categories.

Government representatives stated that the initiative reflects a commitment to accountability and rule of law, while also addressing long-standing concerns raised by political parties and civil society about the misuse of legal processes for political ends.
