Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has expressed hope that implementation of the long-awaited Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project will begin soon, noting that discussions between Dhaka and Beijing on the initiative have continued for years.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, where both sides reviewed progress in bilateral cooperation and development partnerships.
The envoy said technical and policy-level talks on the Teesta project remain ongoing, reflecting the shared interest of both countries in advancing the initiative.
He expressed optimism that groundwork for implementation would move forward in the near future.
Yao Wen also described Bangladesh’s recently held national election as smooth and orderly, calling it a positive development for democratic governance.
He said high-level exchanges between the two countries would continue to strengthen cooperation.
The ambassador referred to a congratulatory message sent by Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on 17 February, following his inauguration.
In the message, Li described China and Bangladesh as longstanding friends and comprehensive strategic cooperative partners, highlighting 51 years of diplomatic relations built on mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
Li expressed readiness to enhance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and expand engagement across sectors to elevate bilateral ties further.
China reiterated its support for the new government and expressed willingness to deepen collaboration for mutual benefit.
