Liberation War Affairs Minister Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, on Sunday said the great Liberation War remains the fundamental and singular basis of Bangladesh’s independence, stressing that no other political movement or struggle should be equated with it.
“It would not be appropriate to place any other movement on the same footing as the Liberation War. The birth of this state rests solely on that historic struggle,” he said while exchanging views with members of the Jatiya Muktijoddha Council (JAMUKA) at the ministry’s conference room.
The minister expressed concern over what he described as the political misuse of the Liberation War’s history and ideals over the years.
He said such misuse has distorted historical narratives and deprived younger generations of learning the authentic story of the country’s independence.
“For a long time, the history and spirit of the Liberation War have been used for political purposes. As a result, many in the new generation remain unaware of the immense sacrifices and hardships endured by freedom fighters,” he said.
Hafiz Uddin urged all stakeholders to uphold the unique dignity and historical significance of the Liberation War and to work collectively to preserve its true legacy.
During the meeting, several important decisions were adopted regarding the verification of the list of genuine freedom fighters and the preservation of accurate historical records.
Liberation War Affairs Secretary Israt Chowdhury, JAMUKA members and senior ministry officials were also present at the meeting.
