Mir Mushfiqur Rahman formally assumed charge as Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division (AFD) on Monday, marking a significant leadership transition within Bangladesh’s central military command structure.

The Armed Forces Division PSO appointment was confirmed during a ceremony in Dhaka where Prime Minister Tarique Rahman adorned Mir Mushfiqur Rahman with the rank badge of Lieutenant General. The event took place at the Armed Forces Division headquarters, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations.

Senior military leadership attended the ceremony, including Chief of Army Staff Waker-Uz-Zaman, Chief of Naval Staff M Nazmul Hassan and Chief of Air Staff Hasan Mahmood Khan. Their presence underscored the institutional importance of the transition within Bangladesh’s defence administration.

Mir Mushfiqur Rahman was commissioned into the Corps of Infantry of the Bangladesh Army on 21 June 1991. Over a distinguished military career spanning more than three decades, he has held key operational and strategic appointments, including General Officer Commanding of the 24 Infantry Division, Military Secretary at Army Headquarters and Director General of the Directorate General of Defence Purchase (DGDP), where he oversaw defence procurement and acquisition frameworks central to force modernisation. The Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division plays a strategic role in coordinating between the three services and the Prime Minister’s Office on defence policy, planning and operational oversight. The position is integral to maintaining command coherence and implementing national security directives.

The appointment comes at a time when Bangladesh continues to modernise its defence capabilities under long-term force development plans. Leadership continuity at the Armed Forces Division remains critical for strategic planning, procurement management and inter-service coordination.

With his operational background and experience in defence procurement administration, Mir Mushfiqur Rahman now assumes responsibility for overseeing one of the country’s most important military coordination bodies at the national level.
