Bangladesh–China relations were in focus on Monday as Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka for high-level discussions on bilateral cooperation.
The meeting took place at the Cabinet Division within the Secretariat at around 11am, according to officials from the Prime Minister’s Office. The Chinese ambassador congratulated Tarique Rahman on assuming office and formally conveyed Beijing’s commitment to advancing ties with Dhaka.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Saleh Shibly said the two sides discussed a range of bilateral issues during the talks. The engagement forms part of ongoing diplomatic coordination between Bangladesh and China, two countries that maintain cooperation across infrastructure development, trade, energy and regional connectivity.
Humayun Kabir, adviser to the Prime Minister, was present at the meeting. Officials described the discussions as constructive and centred on strengthening state-to-state engagement.
Bangladesh and China maintain close economic links, with Beijing playing a significant role in infrastructure financing, transport networks and industrial projects. China is also a major trading partner for Bangladesh, and diplomatic dialogue at the highest level reflects the strategic importance of the relationship.
Following the meeting with the Chinese ambassador, Tarique Rahman presided over a separate policy session at the Cabinet Division conference room regarding the launch of the Farmers’ Card initiative, a government programme aimed at strengthening agricultural support mechanisms and service delivery.
The sequence of meetings underscores active diplomatic engagement at the Secretariat and continued coordination between Bangladesh’s executive leadership and key international partners.
